Do you need a better understanding of the lay of the land of the creative sector in a particular geography to inform your decision making?
The National Film and Video Foundation of South Africa has a mandate to ensure transformation of the sector to address historical inequalities. In order to assess how to impact transformation in the sector, they needed to understand the degree to which transformation was already happening in the sector (in part, because of their existing programmes and investments) and what areas still needed change. We undertook a mapping of the sector, tracking how it had changed in terms of participation of people of colour, women, youth and people with disabilities. Our findings pointed directly to the points in the value chain that had under-representation, but also to the models of investment that best have impact, informing how the NFVF could move forward.

Do you need data driven modeling of potential solutions, to understand what is most feasible and best meets a need?
When the Department of Arts and Culture in Botswana wanted to build a new theatre, we teamed up with Botswana based Maitisong Theatre Company to undertake a feasibility study to inform various approaches to theatre development, and model options the Department should consider to ensure the most impactful investment in cultural infrastructure that money could buy. This was not our first experience with new theatre plans by Governments and so we knew the first place to start is a needs assessment, consulting the theatre and performance sector to best understand what infrastructure is needed, and what would have the highest sustainability factor. Our models were based on projects and performances happening now, but also what it could blossom into in the future, with contextually relevant and effective investments.

Do you need a project, sponsorship or investment evaluated to understand its impact and return on investment?
Kwasha! is an innovative and exciting theatre company developed by the Market Lab to support young graduates of their theatre training programme to enter into the workplace and gain vital experience. Their Sponsor - Audit and Accounting firm Mazars, supported by the Institut Français in South Africa, wanted to understand the impact of the programme and the potential for its growth and development. Andani.Africa undertook an impact evaluation, to help Kwasha! and its supporters understand what was working, but also what could be improved upon. Comparing the career trajectories of Kwasha! members versus a ‘control group’ (people with similar profiles who had not entered into Kwasha!), showed that people who got Kwasha! experience were far more successful.

Do you need guidance on the best possible options for return on investment, and which sectors or contexts are investment ready?
The British Council Southern Africa Arts Programme needed to understand the context of the visual arts in 9 countries across Africa to inform their programme design for the African continent. Noting a growth in global interest in the visual arts from Africa, British Council were interested to understand the gaps and opportunities in the value chain where they could have the most impact. We undertook a 6 month process of interviews, surveys and desktop studies to map out where the opportunities lie and how the British Council could collaborate on the continent to support the sector.

When Dutch creative companies reached out to the Embassy of the Kingdom Netherlands in South Africa to find out more about business opportunities on the African continent, the Embassy brought us on team to help them. Andani.Africa undertook an investment readiness assessment based on key industries that align to the Dutch creative economy’s strengths.
